Stockholm Water gives food waste disposers the go ahead

The food waste disposer category has received further backing following the decision by Stockholm Water to permit their installation in houses in its catchment area. The Swedish Water Authority’s move follows a report highlighting the associated recycling benefits of this simple kitchen appliance.

The report* was originally commissioned as part of a wider initiative to increase the production of biogas by Stockholm Water – a key requirement of which is the increased volume of organic-material arriving at a digester. During the course of the research project it became clear that food waste disposers would complement the existing local strategy of home separation and road collection***.

The report concluded that following the installation of food waste disposers in the city, biogas and sludge production would increase**, potentially providing Stockholm Water with additional saleable, recycled materials. Biogas will be then be used for city buses and other vehicles.

Joe Ferrara, managing director of InSinkErator Europe, said: “This is another feather in the cap of food waste disposers and we are delighted with the conclusions drawn by Stockholm Water, a highly respected body that prioritises environmental practices. There is significant momentum growing in the food waste disposer industry as the category becomes more widely recognised for its environmental benefits, as well as being able to improve convenience and hygiene in the home.”
