US awards housebuilders green points for installing food waste disposers

The green credentials of food waste disposers have received a significant boost following the category’s inclusion in the newly released National Green Building Standard, developed by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), and the International Code Council (ICC).

This decision means new homes built in the US will be awarded one green credit if a food waste disposer is installed at the main kitchen sink – a benefit for housebuilders looking to meet green targets. With around 80 per cent of new homes built in the US including a food waste disposer the move is a milestone in the evolution of this product, which is now increasingly considered as an environmentally responsible appliance.

Joe Ferrara, managing director of InSinkErator™ Europe, said: “The food waste disposer category is gaining more and more recognition for its environmental benefits. This decision demonstrates how this simple kitchen appliance, originally designed for convenience and better hygiene has evolved, it is now considered a viable solution for effective household waste management.”
